Epistaxis is a very common complaint in children.  Moist often it is spontaneous , self limited and recurrent but It is rarely life threatening.

• Deviated nasal septum
• Inflammations due to bacterial and viral rhinosinusitis

Signs and symptoms

1. Bleeding from one or both nostrils
2. Post nasal drip of fluid in to the throat
3. Recurrent swallowing

Management

1. Apply firm digital pressure on your children nose for 5-10 minutes. Do not release the pressure every so frequently to check whether the bleeding has stopped.
2. Use an ice pack to control the bleeding
3. Use nasal saline spray
4. Practice deep, relaxed breathing.
5. Avoid hard nose blowing
6. Avoid hard sneezing and sneeze with the mouth open.
7. Avoid hot and spicy foods
8. Avoid taking hot showers

Prevention

• Protect your child from direct trauma
• Avoid hot and spicy foods
• Keep your children’s nails well trimmed to avoid nasal picking
• Practice your children with good sneezing practices (sneeze softly with the mouth open)
• Don’t use over the counter drugs
