Rubella, also called German measles or three-day measles, is a contagious viral infection best known by its distinctive red rash.

Signs and symptoms:
- Mild fever of 102 F (38.9 C) or lower
- Headache
- Stuffy or running nose
- Inflamed and red eyes
- Enlarged, tender lymph nodes at the base of the skull, the back of the neck and behind the ears
- A fine, pink rash that begins on the face and rapidly spreads to the trunk and then the arms and legs
- Painful joints, especially in young women
Contagious period:
Mode of transmission
- When an infected person coughs or sneezes
- Direct contact with respiratory secretions like mucus.
- And it is also transmitted from a pregnant woman to her unborn child via the bloodstream.
An infected person with rubella is contagious from 10 days before the onset of the rash until about one or two weeks after the rash disappears.
Complications:
Congenital rubella syndrome can lead to growth retardation, cataracts, deafness, congenital heart defects, defects in other organs, and Mental retardation.

Management:

- Bed rest
- Isolation (children should be kept from spreading the infection to others).
Prevention:
- Measles-mumps-rubella immunization (MMR) should be given at 12 to 15 months of age and again at 4 to 6 years of age
