Malaria is an
infectious disease caused by a parasite called Plasmodium. This parasite
invades the red blood cells.

Causes
The following
common species of Plasmodium causes malaria. However the first two species are
more dangerous.
- Plasmodium faciparum
- Plasmodium knowlesi – This newly founded dangerous species commonly seen in long-tailed and pigtail macaque monkeys)
- Plasmodium viva
- Plasmodium malariae
- Plasmodium ovale
Mode
of spread
Malaria is
transmitted to humans by an infected Anopheles mosquito. When this mosquito
bites a person, the malaria parasites injected into the blood.
Incubation period
One to three weeks
Signs and
symptoms
- Fever
- Chills
- sweating
- headache
- muscle aches
- Some patients develop nausea, vomiting
- cough
- diarrhea
- (jaundice) and whites of the eyes due to destruction of red blood cells and liver cells
- Cycles of chills, fever, and sweating will repeat every one, two, or three days are typical.
Severe P. falciparum malaria
- Bleeding problems
- Shock
- liver or kidney failure, central nervous system problems,
- Coma
- Cerebral malaria with symptoms of coma, or altered mental status and seizures
