Headaches in children are common but not serious. Most headaches in children are due to an illness, infection, cold, or fever.

Causes

Types, Signs and symptoms

Migraine headache
  • Head pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Pain in abdomen
  • Sometimes sensitive to noise, light and touch
Tension type headache
  • This type of headache can lasts from 30 minutes to several weeks.
  • Pressing and tightness that occurs on two sides of the head
  • Constant dull Pain not worsened by physical activity
  • Headache that's not accompanied by nausea or vomiting, as is often the case with migraine
Cluster headache

Cluster headaches are not common in children under 10 years of age. They usually:
  • Frequent episodes of headache (five or eight a day)
  • Sharp, stabbing pain on one side of the head that lasts from 15 minutes to 2-3 hours
  • Headache associated with congestion, runny nose, or a restlessness or agitation
Chronic daily headache
  • Chronic headache defined as if the child has headaches more than 15 days a month for more than three months. This may be due to an infection or minor head injury.

Management
  • Rest and relax
  • Support and encourage your child to relax in a dark, quiet room
  • Place a cool, wet cloth on your child’s forehead.
  • Give a healthy snack.
  • Treat the causative factors

Prevention
  1. Make your child to sleep for more time
  2. physically active and provide healthy meals and snacks, and avoid caffeine
  3. Reduce stress
  4. Avoid caffeine containing food or drinks
